Observation 2
School: BJHS
Time: 1:30-3:15
Date: 2/26/14
Population: Approximately 180 in 7th & 8th grade
Teacher: Rene
Materials: Computer, textbooks/W.S./tests, paper/pencil, book (optional & dependent on free-time)
Curriculum:
1) Clarify class tasks for tutoring period.
2) Work on homework, Study Island, test corrections, current projects, make-up & missing work
3) Can read book or clean board/desks when done
Enhancing Self-Esteem and Learning in the Classroom:
I feel that the classroom enhances both student self-esteem and learning. I observed teacher support for both aspects, as well as progress in student skills.
The teacher and the teacher aide both promote self-esteem as they aid students with clarification, guidance, assistance, and supervision for various tasks.
They help students stay focused and productive while teaching them content. They increase student comprehension and skills to enhance learning
development. Students can feel inadequate when they make mistakes or don’t understand certain concepts. They can feel like failures and give up or
shut down. The teachers encourage and support them; it can prevent them from lacking in self-esteem and/or giving up. They provide checklists,
graphic organizers, explicit instruction, verbal reminders, necessary adaptations and modifications, and many other methods, tools, and
resources to ensure better success. During this particular observation, I witnessed students frustrated because a Study Island assignment wasn’t marked
in a way they expected so they couldn’t find it; things were out of routine for them since blizzard bag Study Island assignments were separate and unfamiliar
from their regular Study Island routine. The teachers helped the students to make sure that they could find and complete the assignment. A student
was making corrections on an English test, and was still confused. The teacher had the student get out his notes, and she reviewed the concepts from
the test with the student. Eventually the student figured out what they did wrong, and had a better idea what to do to make the test corrections.
